Connect WeatherXM H2 Open Edition (WS2001) to your LoRaWAN network
The station is configured over Bluetooth with the WeatherXM web flasher at flasher.weatherxm.com. There is nothing to install: it runs in your browser.
Why use the web flasher
- It keeps the station up to date. When you connect a station with older firmware, the flasher updates it to the latest WeatherXM release first. The update keeps all settings, keys and the rain counter.
- It points the station at your network in one step: region, JoinEUI, AppKey and upload interval.
- It keeps the WeatherXM keys. From firmware V4.5 the station stores two network profiles: the WeatherXM one and yours. Switching between them never deletes either set of keys, so you can switch back to the WeatherXM network at any time.
- It keeps the full WeatherXM data frame. Your network receives the same 24-byte frame as the WeatherXM network, including wind gust and rain total, and the flasher gives you the matching decoder for TTN and ChirpStack.
What you need
- A computer (Windows, macOS, Linux, ChromeOS) or an Android phone with Bluetooth and Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge. Safari, Firefox and iPhone/iPad browsers do not support Web Bluetooth.
- To be within a few metres of the station (the Bluetooth range is about 10m/32ft with few obstacles).
- An account on your LoRaWAN Network Server, for example The Things Network or your own ChirpStack, and a LoRaWAN gateway in range of the station.
The station accepts a new Bluetooth pairing only during the first 5 minutes after it starts. If your computer or phone has never connected to this station before, press the reset button once (a short press) at the bottom of the station to restart it, then connect within 5 minutes. Devices that are already paired can connect at any time.
Do not hold the reset button for 10 seconds. That performs a factory reset.
Step by step
1. Open the flasher and connect
- Open flasher.weatherxm.com and choose WS2001 (H2).
- Leave Update the station firmware automatically ticked (recommended).
- Click Connect to WS2001 (H2). In the Bluetooth list, select WeatherXM WS2001 XXXXXX (older units may show WeatherXM WS2000 XXXXXX).
XXXXXXis the end of the station's DevEUI. - If your computer asks to pair, accept it.
The flasher shows the station's DevEUI, network, region, firmware version, battery and upload interval. Copy the DevEUI: you need it to register the station on your network server.
2. Firmware update (automatic)
If the station runs an older firmware than the latest WeatherXM release, the flasher updates it right away:
- The flasher downloads the release and checks that it is genuine (signed for the WS2001 bootloader).
- The station restarts into its update mode.
- Click Continue and select the station again in the Bluetooth list.
In update mode the station appears in the Bluetooth list as DfuWX followed by six characters (for example DfuWX467063), or as DfuTarg. It does not appear as "WeatherXM WS2001 …". Only update-mode devices are listed in this step. After the update it returns to its normal name.
The update takes about a minute. Keep the station powered and stay nearby. If the connection drops, click Try again: the update resumes and the station keeps its previous firmware until the new one is fully installed. When it finishes, click Reconnect to the station.
You can also update (or reinstall) manually at any time with the Update button on the station card.
3. Register the station on your network server
Create the device in TTN or ChirpStack using the DevEUI from step 1, and note the JoinEUI and AppKey you choose. The TTN and ChirpStack guide walks you through both.
4. Enter your network settings
In the LoRaWAN Network Configuration form:
| Field | What to enter |
|---|---|
| Frequency Region | The plan of your gateway: EU868, US915, AU915, AS923-1, IN865, KR920 or RU864 |
| Channel Sub-Band | US915 / AU915 only. Sub-Band 2 (channels 8-15) for TTN and most ChirpStack setups |
| JoinEUI / AppEUI | 16 hex characters, as registered on your server (TTN accepts 0000000000000000) |
| AppKey | 32 hex characters, as registered on your server (or click Generate Random and register that key) |
| Upload Interval | 5 minutes (default). Use 10 minutes or more on TTN if the station is far from the gateway |
Click Apply & Connect to My Network, tick I understand and confirm. The flasher:
- selects the station's custom network profile (the WeatherXM keys stay stored),
- writes the region, JoinEUI, AppKey and interval,
- keeps the WeatherXM 24-byte payload on FPort 99,
- restarts the station so it joins your network.
5. Watch it join
While the station is joining, the red LED breathes (slowly fades in and out). When the join succeeds the LED turns off. On your network server you will see the join followed by the first uplink on FPort 99 within a few minutes.
Disconnecting from the flasher always restarts the station, which then joins again. This is normal.
Switch back to the WeatherXM network
- Connect to the station with the flasher as in step 1.
- The station card shows This station is on your own LoRaWAN network. Click Switch back to WeatherXM and confirm.
The station reactivates its WeatherXM keys and its WeatherXM upload interval, keeps the WeatherXM payload, and restarts to join the WeatherXM network. Your own network profile stays stored on the station; to move back to your network later, repeat step 4.
Switching back to the WeatherXM network may affect proofs, Quality of Data (QoD) and $WXM rewards for the time the station was away.
