Troubleshooting WeatherXM H2 Open Edition (WS2001)

This guide covers common troubleshooting scenarios when deploying and registering the WeatherXM H2 Open Edition weather station on The Things Network, ChirpStack, or private LoRaWAN gateways.

1. Station Does Not Power On / LED Does Not Flash​

When batteries are first installed, the red LED indicator on the underside of the sensor array should flash briefly.

  • Check Battery Polarity: Ensure all 3× AA batteries (or 6× AA in the external pack) are aligned correctly matching the +/- markings.
  • Check Battery Voltage: Ensure you are using fresh, high-quality 1.5V non-rechargeable batteries (Lithium recommended).
  • Inspect Contacts: Check that battery springs and contacts are clean and dry.

Never use rechargeable batteries (e.g. NiMH, Li-ion 3.7V). They can damage the power circuitry.

2. Device Fails to Join the LoRaWAN Network (OTAA Timeout)​

If your LoRaWAN Network Server (The Things Stack Console, ChirpStack) shows no Join Request or Join Accept:

  1. Verify Gateway Coverage & Proximity: Ensure there is an active LoRaWAN gateway in range. Check your gateway's live traffic log to verify whether uplink packets are being received.
  2. Double-Check EUI and Keys:
    • DevEUI: Exactly 16 hexadecimal characters matching the device label.
    • AppEUI / JoinEUI: Exactly 16 hexadecimal characters.
    • AppKey: Exactly 32 hexadecimal characters. A single typo in the AppKey prevents cryptographic derivation of session keys during the OTAA handshake.
  3. Verify Regional Frequency Plan:
    • Europe: EU863-870
    • North America: US902-928 (FSB 2 for TTN)
    • Australia: AU915-928 (FSB 2)
  4. Trigger Manual Join: Press the configuration / join button on the underside of the weather station once to trigger an immediate OTAA Join Request.

3. Web Bluetooth (BLE) Flasher Troubleshooting​

When connecting the sensor to flasher.weatherxm.com to verify firmware or adjust frequency plans:

  • Browser Requirement: Web Bluetooth requires a compatible browser such as Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, or Chromium on desktop or Android.
  • 5-Minute Pairing Window: For security and battery conservation, the station enables Bluetooth advertising for 5 minutes after inserting batteries or pressing the configuration button. If connection fails, press the configuration button or power-cycle the device and retry scanning immediately.
  • Pairing PIN: When prompted by your operating system, enter the default pairing PIN: 000000.

If your network server receives raw hex uplinks (e.g., 01 01 10 00 E4 02 01 ...) on FPort 1 but displays unparsed bytes:

  • Ensure you have pasted the custom JavaScript payload formatter into your application settings under Payload formatters > Uplink.
  • Refer to Introduction & Setup Guide for the complete, tested decoder script.

5. Inaccurate Wind Direction​

If wind direction measurements appear offset:

  • Ensure the North (N) arrow embossed on top of the sensor casing points precisely towards True North. Use a magnetic compass corrected for local magnetic declination, or a smartphone GPS compass app.

6. Rain Gauge Tipping Bucket False Triggers​

  • Pole Oscillation: If wind causes high rainfall rates during dry windy conditions, ensure the mounting pole is securely braced and rigid. Mechanical swaying can oscillate the internal tipping spoon.
  • Leveling: Check that the spirit bubble level on top of the casing is perfectly centered.
